Bergen's Immortal have been one of black metal's most distinctive acts since forming in 1991, built around the pairing of Abbath and Demonaz. Their early records, especially Pure Holocaust and Battles in the North, set a blueprint for icy, relentless black metal that countless bands have tried to follow. The now legendary 1995 music videos shot on a Norwegian mountainside, all frozen landscapes and corpse paint, became a visual template for the whole genre. At the Heart of Winter shifted things considerably, weaving German thrash influences into the black metal framework and showing a more ambitious side. After a lengthy split and internal drama that saw Abbath depart in 2015, Demonaz stepped up to handle both guitar and vocals. The band came back strong with Northern Chaos Gods in 2018, and their 2023 full album War Against All proved they are far from done.
