About
Few pianists command Schubert and Schumann the way Imogen Cooper does. The English pianist built her craft through years of study in Paris and Vienna, working closely with Alfred Brendel among others, and that deep grounding shows in playing that critics have described as virtuosity without razzle dazzle. She has never been content to stay in the safe repertoire, though: she gave the world premiere of Thomas Adès's Traced Overhead, and her discography spans Mozart concertos, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, and Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, all recorded for Chandos. A long partnership with baritone Wolfgang Holzmair has produced several well regarded lieder recordings, and she chairs the jury of the Leeds International Piano Competition. Cooper received a DBE in 2021 for services to music, and in 2026 she released a recording of Beethoven's last three sonatas.
