Vice summed it up in 2017 by calling Incantation "the truest death metal band on the planet," and that reputation has been earned over more than three decades of relentless output. Formed in New Jersey in 1989 by John McEntee and Paul Ledney, the band carved out a signature sound that fuses death metal with black metal and doom influences: slow, down tuned passages and punishing riffs built around feeling rather than flash. McEntee himself put it simply, saying the riff is nothing without the feeling it creates. Though the lineup has shuffled constantly, McEntee remains the one constant, handling guitars and vocals since 2003. Drummer Kyle Severn has been a near permanent fixture since the third album. With twelve studio albums to their name, the latest being Unholy Deification released in 2023 through Relapse Records, Incantation have built a serious cult following and left a clear mark on a whole generation of cavernous death metal acts including Dead Congregation, Grave Miasma, and Portal.
