About
Also known as: Incognito - Jazz Funk, インコグニート
Incognito have been quietly doing their thing since 1979, when Jean Paul 'Bluey' Maunick and Paul 'Tubbs' Williams broke away from the London funk collective Light of the World to form something leaner and more groove focused. Their debut album Jazz Funk dropped in 1981, and while the band spent years as a cult favourite in the acid jazz scene, their real chart moment came in 1991 with a cover of Ronnie Laws' 'Always There' featuring Jocelyn Brown, which climbed to number 6 in the UK. 'Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing' followed in 1992 with similar success. Bluey has always treated Incognito as a rotating cast rather than a fixed lineup, pulling in singers like Carleen Anderson, Maysa Leak, Imaani, Tony Momrelle and Natalie Duncan over the years. Remixers from Masters at Work to Jazzanova have dug their material deeply enough that the band has released multiple albums of remixes. In 2021 they marked forty years with a massive 106 track retrospective of that debut record.
