About
Ingrid Laubrock plays saxophone like someone with nothing to prove and everything to say. The German born, New York based improviser works across tenor, soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones, operating firmly in the territory of free jazz and free improvisation. Her 2009 SWR Jazz Award winning recording Sleepthief, made with pianist Liam Noble and drummer Tom Rainey, was a key early statement, and the pair later followed it up with The Madness of Crowds in 2011. Laubrock's reach extends well beyond the usual jazz circles. She has shared stages and sessions with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Kenny Wheeler, and Norma Winstone, and her orchestral composition Vogelfrei, from the album Contemporary Chaos Practices, landed on The New York Times list of the 25 best classical music tracks of 2018. More recently she has been active with her group Lilith, documented in a 2023 live recording, keeping her output restless and hard to pin down.
