Intronaut built their reputation on music that refuses to sit still. The Los Angeles progressive metal band weaves together sludge, jazz, stoner metal, and post metal into something that feels genuinely sui generis: dense polyrhythms, fretless bass as a lead melodic voice, and guitars that can swing from head banging riffs to dissonant ambience within the same song. Their vocal approach has shifted over the years, from screaming and growling into the rich Alice in Chains style harmonies that guitarist vocalists Sacha Dunable and Dave Timnick developed starting with Valley of Smoke, which even featured a guest appearance from Tool bassist Justin Chancellor. Their sixth album, Fluid Existential Inversions, arrived in 2020 after a five year gap, recorded with session drummer Alex Rüdinger following the firing of founding drummer Danny Walker in 2018. The band has toured with some heavy company over the years, including Tool, Mastodon, and Animals as Leaders, and their catalogue spans six full lengths that trace a clear arc from raw sludge aggression to something far more textured and unpredictable.
