Port Neches, Texas metalcore outfit Invent Animate have been refining their sound since 2011, sitting comfortably at the crossroads of djent, progressive metal, and metalcore. Their catalog runs from the debut EP Waves through four full studio albums, each one pushing the sonic palette a little further. Everchanger put them on the map, Stillworld deepened the atmosphere, and Greyview introduced Swedish vocalist Marcus Vik, whose arrival gave the band a noticeably fresh energy. The 2023 album Heavener, released on Australian independent label UNFD, is the latest chapter in that evolution. Along the way they have navigated real upheaval, including the departure of founding vocalist Ben English in 2018 and drummer Trey Celaya stepping back from touring to join Fit for a King full time, while still contributing to recording sessions. The 2021 EP The Sun Sleeps, as If It Never Was came with a striking 10 minute concept video and tackled themes of addiction and loss, showing a band willing to go somewhere genuinely heavy beyond just the music.
