About

Iona Brown spent more than a decade at the heart of one of the world's great chamber ensembles, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, eventually becoming its leader, solo violinist and director in 1974. Her playing was closely associated with Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending, and she once described how walking on the Wiltshire downs near her home, listening to actual larks, shaped the way she interpreted that piece. It is a wonderfully specific detail that says a lot about her approach. Her career expanded well beyond the violin. She led the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra from 1981, earning a royal honour from King Olav V in recognition of what she built there, and she directed the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra across two separate stints during the late 1980s and 1990s. As arthritis gradually made violin playing impossible, she moved fully into conducting, serving as chief conductor of the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra in her final years.
