About
Also known as: Erma Thomas
Known as the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas has been one of the most distinctive voices in southern soul for over six decades. Her work with songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint on the Minit label in the early 1960s gave her some of her most enduring recordings, including "Ruler of My Heart", which Otis Redding later transformed into "Pain in My Heart". Her song "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)", co written by a young Randy Newman, found a whole new audience through repeated use in the TV series Black Mirror. Thomas never crossed over into the mainstream the way some of her contemporaries did, but her reputation only grew with time. She picked up a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for After the Rain in 2007, and in 2024 she shared a stage with the Rolling Stones at Jazz Fest to perform "Time Is on My Side", the first time the two ever performed together. Most recently she released Audience with the Queen alongside New Orleans electro funk outfit Galactic.
