Eleni Tsaligopoulou has spent over three decades as one of Greece's best selling recording artists, and she got there by being genuinely hard to pin down. Her 1990 album Κορίτσι και γυναίκα, made with songwriter Nikos Xydakis, was such a hit that it helped define the whole "modern artistic" wave of Greek music in the 1990s. She toured with George Dalaras for ten years, headlined the Athens Concert Hall with the songs of Vassilis Tsitsanis, and even appeared in a staging of Iphigenia in Aulis. She has always moved comfortably between éntekhno, folk roots, rembetika and bolder western pop sounds, picking collaborators like Mode Plagal and Mikro along the way. Her band, which she renamed Bogaz Musique in 2015, backed her through a two and a half hour show in New York and Boston, covering everything from her own catalogue to classic hits by Manos Hatzidakis and Mikis Theodorakis. Few Greek artists of her generation have stayed this restless this long.
