About
Winning the International Chopin Piano Competition at just 18 made Yundi the youngest pianist ever to claim that title, and the first Chinese musician to do so. That victory in Warsaw in 2000 set the tone for a career built around Chopin, Liszt, and Prokofiev, with critics singling out his B minor Liszt Sonata recording as among the finest ever committed to disc. He became the first Chinese pianist signed to Deutsche Grammophon, and his debut album shifted 200,000 copies in Japan alone. Over the years Yundi has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and many other top ensembles, and he made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2003. Poland has recognised his deep connection to Chopin with the world's first Chopin passport and both the Silver and Gold Gloria Artis medals. After a pause in his career, he returned to the stage in 2023 with a tour in Australia and has since played Carnegie Hall again.
