About
Also known as: Yitzhak Perlman, יצחק פרלמן
Few violinists have carved out a presence as wide as Itzhak Perlman. Born in Tel Aviv, he became one of the most recognizable classical soloists in the world, racking up 16 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, four Emmy Awards, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. His technique is the stuff of legend: a tone that can fill any hall, and a versatility that has taken him from Tchaikovsky and Bruch concertos with the world's great orchestras to jazz recordings with Oscar Peterson, klezmer, and even bluegrass. Perlman plays the violin seated, using crutches to get around, and has never let that slow him down for a second. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1963, won the Leventritt Competition in 1964, and by the late 1960s was touring Europe and debuting with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also turned up on Sesame Street, sung a bit part in a Puccini opera recording alongside Plácido Domingo and Renata Scotto, and performed at the inauguration of Barack Obama. Not many classical musicians can say all of that.
