About

Izhar Elias made history as the first guitarist to win the Dutch Music Prize, a fitting recognition for someone who has spent his career pushing the classical guitar into unusual territory. Based in the Netherlands, he specialises in historically informed performance, playing Baroque, Classical and Romantic repertoire on period instruments, including a rare 1812 Guadagnini guitar made possible through the Prince Bernard Cultural Foundation. His work goes well beyond solo recitals: he has clocked up more than 30 world premieres, collaborated with choreographers and filmmakers, and performed as soloist with major Dutch orchestras including the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest. He is also a founding member of Cordevento, the trio he formed with recorder player Erik Bosgraaf and harpsichordist Alessandro Pianu in 2006 to revive virtuoso 17th century repertoire. The group has played at the Concertgebouw, the Konzerthaus Vienna and the Utrecht Early Music Festival among others. His solo discography covers a wide range, from opera transcriptions of Rossini's Semiramide arranged by Mauro Giuliani to a Beethoven guitar album and a tribute to Debussy featuring Spanish and French music.
