About
Also known as: Jacques L. (Jack) Poels
Jack Poels is the voice, guitarist and harmonica player behind Rowwen Hèze, the beloved Limburgish dialect band he helped shape into an act with both national and international reach. His sound blends Irish folk, Tex Mex and traditional accordion music into something distinctly his own, and he writes nearly all the band's lyrics and music himself. Those lyrics have a rawness to them: albums like Vandaag and Dageraad pulled directly from his personal life, covering everything from the birth of his son to going through a divorce. Poels is more than just a musician. He is also a painter, responsible for the iconic Rowwen Hèze image on the Blieve Loëpe cover, a cartoon Statue of Liberty holding a cigarette, a clog and a pot of beer. Since 2003 he has collaborated with former Toontje Lager bassist Leon Giesen on the project Holland America Lijn, and from 2009 he started publishing poems in Dagblad de Limburger every two weeks. Some of those poems became songs through Herberg de Troost, a music collective he runs with others.
