Edward Elgar spent decades feeling like an outsider before the Enigma Variations in 1899 suddenly made him famous on both sides of the Channel. Self taught in an era of conservatory trained rivals, Roman Catholic in Protestant Britain, and acutely class conscious, he channelled all of that tension into music that still defines the sound of late Victorian and Edwardian England. His orchestral writing is rich and highly personal: the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, a violin concerto and a cello concerto, and two symphonies that together cover a remarkable emotional range. His choral work The Dream of Gerontius, setting a Roman Catholic text, ruffled Anglican feathers when it appeared in 1900 but has never left the repertory since. Most of his continental European influences sat awkwardly with the idea of him as a quintessentially English composer, yet that is exactly how he came to be heard. He was also a pioneer of the recording studio, conducting acoustic sessions of his own works from 1914 onwards and then embracing the moving coil microphone to re record much of his catalogue. After his death his reputation dipped for a generation before reviving strongly from the 1960s onward.
