About
James Heather has built his reputation as a pianist and composer who does things his own way. Working out of London and releasing through Coldcut's Ahead Of Our Time label, he developed what he calls 'Pulse Music', a approach that trusts human instinct and improvisation over strict notation or a metronome. The results are solo piano pieces that pull from classical roots while absorbing the texture and ambience of electronic and post rock music. His debut album Stories from Far Away on Piano reached number 14 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Albums chart, with the concept rooted in his interpretations of real world news stories. His 2022 follow up Invisible Forces explored awareness of unseen forces shaping human connection, earning reviews in the Financial Times, Mojo and Uncut. He has collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto, contributed to Nils Frahm's Piano Day Compilation, and performed at the Royal Albert Hall. The 2023 Reworks Vol.2 brought in names like Mogwai, Coldcut and Voces8 to reimagine his catalogue.
