About
Also known as: James Gabriel Leo Lavelle
James Lavelle built one of the most influential corners of 1990s electronic music when he launched Mo' Wax in 1992, a label that put out records by DJ Shadow and Dr. Octagon while shaping the sound of trip hop and breakbeat culture. He has been the sole constant presence in Unkle, the project that has produced six albums from Psyence Fiction in 1998 through to The Road: Part II in 2019. Beyond the records, he mixed the very first FabricLive album and has put out four Global Underground sets, plus soundtracks for films including Sexy Beast and the TV series Trust. His reach goes well past DJing and production. He produced the title track on Queens of the Stone Age's 2013 record Like Clockwork, directed the Meltdown festival in 2014 with a lineup that brought together Josh Homme, Max Richter, Neneh Cherry and Goldie, and curated the Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick exhibition at Somerset House in 2016. That same year he was the subject of the documentary The Man from Mo'Wax.
