About
Before James Newman ever stepped onto a Eurovision stage, he was quietly racking up some serious songwriting credits. He co wrote "Waiting All Night" for Rudimental and Ella Eyre, which topped the UK Singles Chart and earned him a Brit Award for British Single of the Year in 2014. He then co wrote Calvin Harris's "Blame" with his brother John Newman, another UK number one that also cracked the Billboard Hot 100. His pen also reached Kesha's 2017 album Rainbow and Toni Braxton's Sex and Cigarettes. On the performance side, Newman featured on Armin van Buuren's 2018 hit "Therapy" and released his debut EP The Things We Do in 2020. That same year the BBC picked him to represent the UK at Eurovision, but the contest was cancelled due to the pandemic. He went back the following year with the upbeat "Embers", a song he described as something people could dance to even in their kitchen. It finished last with nul points, making him part of a notably rare moment in Eurovision history.
