About
Also known as: Jamila Abidemi Woods, Jamila for M&O
Jamila Woods is a Chicago singer, songwriter and poet whose songs double as a reading list. On her second album, Legacy! Legacy!, every track is named after a Black creator, with titles like Zora, Eartha, Baldwin and Sula. Her work keeps circling back to Black ancestry, Black feminism, self love and the city she calls home. Many people first heard her voice on Chance the Rapper's Sunday Candy and Blessings, and she also appears on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's White Privilege II. Before going solo she fronted the soul pop band Milo and Otis with Owen Hill, who released two albums. Her debut Heavn arrived in 2016 and landed at number 36 on Pitchfork's list of the year's best albums, with guests like Noname and Saba. Alongside the music, she has published poetry chapbooks, co edited an anthology of Black women poets, and helped run youth arts programs in Chicago.
