Janke Dekker is a Dutch singer who works within the kleinkunst tradition, a genre rooted in intimate, text driven song that sits somewhere between cabaret and art song. Her repertoire draws on the broader canon of Dutch kleinkunst, mixing well known favourites with overlooked gems that she feels deserve a second life. She performs with a small orchestra led by Erik Vlasblom, and her show is built around a personal selection of pieces: funny ones, moving ones, familiar and forgotten alike. The thread running through her choices is captured in a line she quotes from Jenny Arean's programme Gedeelde Smart: that life comes down to two things, recognising love sooner or later, and pointing out the beautiful things along the way. It is a pretty good summary of what Dekker brings to the stage.
