Tunisian violinist and viola d'amore player Jasser Haj Youssef has carved out a genuinely rare space, blending jazz and Arabic music with influences from baroque, medieval and early music traditions. Based in Paris, he brings a musicologist's ear to compositions that feel both ancient and alive. His instrument of choice, the viola d'amore, is already an unusual pick, and he uses it to navigate a sound world that shifts between Oriental music, contemporary forms and jazz improv. His albums Sira and Resonance, both released on Musicast, showcase that range well. Over the years he has shared stages and recording sessions with the likes of Youssou N'Dour, Barbara Hendricks and Didier Lockwood, as well as a string of leading Arab and Mediterranean artists.
