About

Jean Guihen Queyras plays the cello with a range that few of his peers can match, moving comfortably from Baroque concertos on period instruments to world premieres of brand new works. He has given first performances of pieces by Ivan Fedele, Bruno Mantovani, Gilbert Amy, Thomas Larcher and Tristan Murail, making him a go to cellist for living composers. His recordings on Harmonia Mundi cover a lot of ground: the complete Bach and Britten cello suites, Dvorak and Elgar concertos, Beethoven sonatas with Alexander Melnikov, and Baroque concertos by Haydn and Vivaldi with period ensembles. He is part of the Arcanto Quartet alongside Antje Weithaas, Daniel Sepec and Tabea Zimmermann, and regularly plays piano trios with Isabelle Faust and Melnikov. The instrument he plays is a 1696 Gioffredo Cappa cello on loan from the Société Générale, and he uses two different bows depending on the repertoire, a heavier one for twentieth and twenty first century music and a lighter Tourte for earlier works. He has been a professor at the Musikhochschule Freiburg since 2011.
