About
Also known as: Jeffery Eugene Mills, Jeffery Mills, Jeffrey Lee Mills
Known as "the Wizard" long before techno had a global audience, Jeff Mills built his reputation in Detroit's clubs and on its radio airwaves, playing at a speed and intensity that Eminem later namechecked on The Marshall Mathers LP 2. He co founded Underground Resistance with Mike Banks in the late 1980s, a collective that wrapped revolutionary politics in uncompromising machine music, before stepping out on his own and setting up Axis Records in Chicago in 1992. What sets Mills apart is how far he has pushed techno beyond the club. He scored Fritz Lang's 1927 silent film Metropolis, performed live with the 70 piece Montpelier Philharmonic Orchestra for the 2006 album Blue Potential, and shot the independent film Life to Death and Back inside the Egyptian wing of the Louvre during a four month residency there. His 2013 album Where Light Ends drew inspiration from Japanese astronaut Mamoru Mohri, and in 2018 he recorded with Afrojazz drummer Tony Allen. In 2017, French cultural authorities awarded him the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
