Thom Yorke once namechecked Jega as an influence on Kid A, which tells you something about where this Manchester producer sits in the electronic music world. Dylan Nathan has been releasing music as Jega since 1996, starting out on Skam Records before his debut LP Spectrum became the very first release on Mike Paradinas's Planet Mu label. That record drew on the breakbeat and intelligent dance music sounds bubbling out of London at the time, while his follow up Geometry pushed further into pure synthesis, leaving samples behind entirely. Jega toured the US extensively after both Spectrum and Geometry were licensed to Matador Records, and he also hit the road with Autechre back in 1997. His third album Variance had a famously troubled path to release: despite only six copies of the demo ever being made, it leaked online in 2004 and Jega held it back for years, finally putting it out as a double album on Planet Mu in 2009. Glitchy, detailed and patient, his work has always rewarded close listening.
