About

Jennifer Larmore is an American mezzo soprano who has built a career on coloratura and bel canto roles, and she has sung them in just about every major opera house going. Her Metropolitan Opera debut came in 1995 as Rosina in Rossini's Barber of Seville, and she went on to play Angelina in La Cenerentola, Hansel, Giulio Cesare and Gertrude in Hamlet there, plus a spot in the world premiere of Tobias Picker's An American Tragedy. The trophy shelf is solid: the 1994 Richard Tucker Award, a 1992 Gramophone award for her title role in Giulio Cesare, and the 2007 Grammy for Best Opera Recording for Hansel and Gretel. She also sang at the 1996 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in Atlanta. From 2012 she started taking on dramatic soprano parts, including Lady Macbeth in Verdi's Macbeth and Kostelnicka in Janacek's Jenufa. Away from the stage she has written a book, Una Voce, aimed at helping singers make sense of freelance life, and she taught at Seoul National University from 2021 to 2024.
