Winning The Voice Belgique in 2021 was just the start for Jérémie Makiese. The Belgian singer, born in Antwerp, caught everyone's attention with a blind audition of Labrinth's "Jealous" that had all four coaches turning their chairs, and he went on to take the whole competition. Less than a year later he was on the Eurovision stage in Turin representing Belgium with "Miss You", qualifying from the second semi final and finishing 19th in the Grand Final. His musical touchstones say a lot about his sound: he draws inspiration from soul and funk legends like Otis Redding, James Brown, Bill Withers and Aretha Franklin, alongside Michael Jackson and Belgian artists Stromae and Damso. What makes Makiese an unusual figure is that alongside his singing career he has genuinely played professional football as a goalkeeper, signing with Excelsior Virton in 2021. His YouTube channel, where he has been uploading as Jellam, shows him continuing to put out music, including the track "Miss You" and behind the scenes content around it.
