About
Also known as: Jerry Berganzi
Jerry Bergonzi is one of the most respected tenor saxophonists in post bop jazz, a Boston fixture who has spent decades both performing at the highest level and teaching at the New England Conservatory of Music. He first made a wide impression as a regular guest on Dave Brubeck's tours through the 1970s, eventually holding the saxophone chair in the Brubeck quartet from 1979 to 1982 and recording nine albums with him along the way. His output spans an enormous range of labels, from Blue Note and Atlantic to his own Not Fat Records imprint. Beyond performing, Bergonzi has carved out a serious reputation as a jazz educator. His multi volume Inside Improvisation series, complete with play along CDs and videos, has become a go to resource for saxophonists and improvisers worldwide. He also plays piano and bass guitar at a professional level, and has had nearly 200 of his original compositions compiled and made available as free PDF books.
