Jimmy Burns spent decades quietly perfecting a sound rooted deep in the Mississippi Delta before Chicago's blues scene finally got a proper look at what he could do. His residency at the Smokedaddy Club in the early 1990s was the turning point: Delmark Records boss Bob Koester caught a single set and immediately wanted to record him. The resulting debut, Leaving Here Walking (1996), won Best Blues Record of the Year from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors and picked up two W.C. Handy Award nominations, launching Burns into international touring. Before all that, Burns had a fascinating patchwork of a career, playing doo wop with The Medallionaires as a teenager, cutting solo singles through the 1960s, and touring the Midwest with outfits like the Fantastic Epics. His 1972 single "I Really Love You" became a Northern soul collector's item, landing in the top 500 Northern soul singles of all time. He has since released a string of albums on Delmark, with Full Circle arriving in 2025.
