About
João Farinha is a fado singer from Coimbra, a city whose version of the genre grew out of student serenades sung in the streets at night. His own path took him from a first group, AEMINIUM, founded in October 1998, to stages across Portugal and in more than 30 countries around the world. He has also joined a string of projects alongside some of the genre's leading voices, and his discography runs to several albums. In 2010 he started Fado ao Centro with Luís Barroso and Luís Carlos Santos. It is now seen as the best known Coimbra fado project in Portugal. The aim is to respect a tradition that goes back some 150 years while pushing it forward, with new songs and fresh takes on the classic repertoire. The sound still rests on classical guitar, Portuguese guitar and voice, but it carries traditional influences from across Portugal.
