About

Also known as: Sir John Eliot Gardiner CBE

Few conductors have committed to a single composer the way John Eliot Gardiner did with his Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in 2000, performing all of Bach's sacred cantatas across 52 weeks in churches throughout Europe and the United States with the Monteverdi Choir. That project alone cemented his reputation as one of the great Bach interpreters of his generation, and he later wrote the book Music in the Castle of Heaven as a full portrait of the composer. Gardiner founded three ensembles that shaped how early music is performed today: the Monteverdi Choir, the English Baroque Soloists, and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. With that third group he moved into Beethoven and Berlioz territory, including all of Beethoven's symphonies, and he has guest conducted virtually every major orchestra from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Vienna Philharmonic. He has also been candid about one blind spot: he openly loathes Wagner and refuses to conduct him.
