About
John Holiday is an American countertenor whose voice sits in a rare and striking range, and he moves easily between Baroque opera, contemporary premieres, gospel, jazz, and pop. He has originated roles in world premieres by composers including Huang Ruo, Daniel Bernard Roumain, and Matthew Aucoin, and his career has taken him from Spoleto and Lincoln Center to the Dutch National Opera and Carnegie Hall. His Metropolitan Opera debut came in 2021 in Aucoin's Eurydice, and in 2022 he returned to the Met for the world stage premiere of Kevin Puts's The Hours. Holiday toured with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performing Bernstein's Chichester Psalms in New York, London, and Paris. He also became a familiar face to a very different audience when he competed on season 19 of NBC's The Voice. Since 2023 he has been associate professor of voice at the University of Maryland School of Music.
