About
Under the name Wavemaker, John Lewis teamed up with Brian Hodgson of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to release albums of melodic synthesizer music through their shared studio, Electrophon Music Ltd, based in a Neal's Yard warehouse in Covent Garden. Before that chapter, Lewis had already made a name for himself in contemporary dance, composing scores for Ballet Rambert productions including Isolde and Spindrift, both choreographed by Norman Morrice and performed at major UK venues in the early 1970s. He also toured with the company as Assistant Musical Director and pianist. His work sits at the crossroads of experimental composition and electronic sound, shaped by study under German composer Hans Werner Henze in Rome and earlier work composing for modern dance performances in London.
