About

Also known as: J. Rutter, John Milford Rutter, Rutter

Few living composers have had their music performed at as many royal occasions as John Rutter. The London born choral composer wrote the anthem "This is the Day" for the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, contributed arrangements to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee service, and had six pieces performed at the Coronation of Charles III. His larger works like the Requiem, Gloria, and Magnificat sit alongside a catalogue of Christmas carols, anthems and hymn settings that have become fixtures in choirs across the UK and the United States. Rutter's style is genuinely eclectic, drawing on French and English choral traditions, light music and American classic songwriting, and his orchestrations range from strings alone to full brass and percussion. He founded the Cambridge Singers in 1981 and has recorded extensively with them on his own label, Collegium Records. He also co edited the beloved Carols for Choirs anthology series with David Willcocks, cementing his place as one of the most practically influential figures in choral music today.
