About
Three Grammy wins and more than fifty records as a bandleader tell you a lot about where John Scofield sits in the jazz world. The American guitarist moves fluently across bebop, blues and funk, acoustic settings and groove heavy electric ones, always landing somewhere that sounds unmistakably like him. That stylistic range, combined with a relaxed command of the instrument, is what has kept him at the front of jazz fusion and jazz rock for decades. For his Combo 75 project Scofield surrounds himself with a younger generation of musicians to keep the sound fresh. Keyboardist Gerald Clayton, born in the Netherlands and the son of bassist John Clayton, joins alongside Vicente Archer, known from Robert Glasper's trio, on bass. Completing the group is Bill Stewart on drums, who has been Scofield's regular drummer since the nineties. The lineup draws on the same circle of players as his celebrated album Combo 66.
