John Scofield plays guitar the way a lot of people wish they could, weaving jazz, funk, blues, soul and rock into something that feels both cerebral and deeply groove oriented. His career shifted into a higher gear when he joined Miles Davis in 1982, spending three and a half years contributing tunes and guitar to albums including Star People, Decoy and You're Under Arrest. That association put him squarely at the center of jazz's electric conversation. Since then he has barely slowed down. He recorded the funky, organ drenched Hand Jive and Groove Elation in the mid 1990s, collaborated twice with the jammy collective Medeski, Martin and Wood, paid tribute to Ray Charles on That's What I Say, and explored gospel sounds on Piety Street. His trio with Steve Swallow and Bill Stewart has been a consistent creative home, and a collaboration with British composer Mark Anthony Turnage produced the orchestral Scorched, released on Deutsche Grammophon. Nine Grammy nominations and three wins give you a rough sense of the respect he commands.
