About

Also known as: John Van Derslice, Jon Vanderslice

John Vanderslice once faked a legal fight with Microsoft to promote a song called "Bill Gates Must Die," and it worked well enough to land him interviews with Spin, Wired and the San Francisco Chronicle. That 2000 debut, Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, kicked off a run of nineteen studio albums, including the politically charged Pixel Revolt and Emerald City, and later the more inward Romanian Names. Before going solo he spent five years in the experimental band Mk Ultra, whose last record scored a 9.2 from Pitchfork. He's just as known for what happens behind the glass. In 1997 he founded Tiny Telephone, an all analog studio in San Francisco (with an Oakland location still running), where Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater Kinney, Spoon and the Mountain Goats have all recorded. His own records have taken some bold turns too: White Wilderness was cut live in three days with a 19 piece orchestra, and Dagger Beach came out of a Kickstarter that hit its goal within hours.
