About
Also known as: Johny Gill, Jonny Gill
Johnny Gill is probably best known as the sixth and final member of New Edition, the R&B group he joined in 1987 to fill the gap left by Bobby Brown's departure. His arrival helped shift the group toward a more grown, polished sound, and he shared lead vocals with Ralph Tresvant on Heart Break, which gave the world "Can You Stand the Rain" and "If It Isn't Love". That same soulful intensity carried straight into his solo work, with his 1990 self titled album producing back to back hits like "My, My, My" and "Rub You the Right Way", a song that found a whole new audience decades later when it went viral on TikTok. Gill has kept busy across multiple fronts. He teamed with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat to form the supergroup LSG, landing a multi platinum debut with Levert.Sweat.Gill. After a 15 year gap between solo records, he returned in 2011 with Still Winning and has since launched his own label, J Skillz Records, releasing Game Changer and Game Changer II. With over 15 million solo records sold worldwide, he remains one of the more durable figures in contemporary R&B and quiet storm.
