About
Also known as: Errol Osbourne, Johnnie Osbourne, Johnny Osborne, Jonny Osbourne
Johnny Osbourne, born Errol Osbourne in Kingston, Jamaica, earned the nickname Dancehall Godfather for good reason. He is the most in demand vocalist for dubplates, a status built on a run of dancehall classics that few can match. His mid 1980s hits "Buddy Bye", "Ice Cream Love" and "Water Pumping" are the ones that tend to stick in the memory, but his roots reggae album Truths and Rights showed a different side, a deeper, more spiritual sound built around tracks like "Jah Promise" and the title cut. His career has stretched across a remarkable range of styles, from rocksteady beginnings with The Wildcats in 1967 to soulful covers of Earth, Wind and Fire and Hopeton Lewis, to hard dancehall for producers like King Jammy and Bobby Digital. The Bobby Digital sessions in the late 1980s produced "Good Time Rock" and "Rude Boy Skank", both collected on his 1989 album Rougher Than Them. His reach even extended into more recent club culture when Major Lazer sampled his track "Mr. Marshall" for their 2012 single "Jah No Partial".
