Johnny Rawls is the kind of soul blues artist who makes you wonder why more people aren't talking about him. Rooted in the deep soul and gospel sounds of O. V. Wright, James Carr, and Z. Z. Hill, Rawls spent years as Wright's music director and touring band leader before striking out on his own, and those years clearly shaped everything he does. His voice, as one critic put it, can make even mediocre material sound convincing, though the material he writes himself is rarely mediocre. He has more than 100 songwriting credits to his name and has released over 20 albums. His 2009 album Ace of Spades was a tribute to Wright and earned him his first Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Album of the Year. His Catfood Records run produced three Critics Choice winners in Living Blues, covering Red Cadillac, Ace of Spades, and Memphis Still Got Soul. He later moved to Third Street Cigar Records, where his album I'm Still Around took the Soul Blues Album of the Year prize at the 40th Blues Music Awards.
