Jonas Kaufmann is the German tenor that critics can't stop talking about. The New York Times called him the most important and versatile tenor of his time, and it's easy to see why: he moves between the heavy demands of Wagner, the lyrical sweep of Puccini and Verdi, and the intimate world of German Lieder without seeming to break a sweat. Roles like Don José in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and Siegmund in Die Walküre are all in his wheelhouse, and he has performed them on the stages of the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House among others. His discography is equally wide ranging, from Schubert song cycles with pianist Helmut Deutsch to full opera recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Simon Rattle. In 2022 he was named Kammersänger by the Vienna State Opera after a performance of Peter Grimes, one of the highest honours the house can bestow.
