Jonathan Biss is one of those pianists who treats a concert programme like a carefully argued essay. He built his reputation on deep dives into single composers, most famously a nine disc Beethoven piano sonata cycle released on Onyx over nine years, alongside a Schumann season he described as the work of 'a fanatic for every note Schumann wrote.' That kind of obsessive focus runs through everything he does. He was the first classical musician to partner with Coursera, turning his Beethoven sonata expertise into a free video course that reached more than 150,000 students across 185 countries. Biss is also a genuine champion of new music, commissioning and premiering concertos and solo pieces from composers including Caroline Shaw, Brett Dean, Timo Andres and Salvatore Sciarrino. He co directs the Marlboro Music Festival alongside Mitsuko Uchida, a place he knows intimately after spending 12 summers there as a participant. He teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music and has written several Kindle ebooks exploring what it actually feels like to perform the repertoire he loves.
