About
Also known as: Jordi Saval, Jordi Savall (Director)
Few musicians have done more to bring early music out of the archives and into living, breathing performance than Jordi Savall. The Catalan viol player, conductor and composer has spent decades championing the viola da gamba, an instrument most people had quietly forgotten, and his more than 200 recordings cover everything from medieval polyphony to Romantic orchestral works. His soundtrack for the 1991 film Tous les matins du monde sold over a million copies worldwide and introduced countless listeners to the sound of the viol family for the first time. Savall runs his own record label, Alia Vox, and leads three ensembles: the period instrument group Hespèrion XXI, the vocal ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya, and the orchestra Le Concert des Nations. His curiosity pushes well beyond European traditions too. Albums like Les Routes de l'Esclavage weave in African vernacular music, while his Orient Occident projects draw on Arabic, Sephardic and Christian music from medieval Al Andalus through to Syria and Turkey. He also organises music festivals set in historic monasteries and abbeys in Catalonia and southern France.
