Jörg Widmann wears a lot of hats, and he's genuinely brilliant at all of them. A German composer, conductor and clarinetist from Munich, he was ranked the third most performed living contemporary composer in the world in 2023, which is a remarkable place to stand in a crowded field. His compositions range widely: the concert overture Con brio, the opera Babylon with a libretto by philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, an oratorio called Arche, and a trumpet concerto named Towards Paradise are among his most significant works. He also holds the Edward Said Chair in Composition at the Barenboim Said Akademie in Berlin. As a clarinetist, Widmann has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic and Munich Philharmonic, and his core repertoire stretches from Mozart and Brahms to Pierre Boulez. Chamber music partners have included Daniel Barenboim, Mitsuko Uchida and Hélène Grimaud. He has served as composer in residence for the Berlin Philharmonic and as Gewandhaus composer for the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig, and picked up both the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art and the Bach Prize of Hamburg along the way.
