Billboard once dubbed Jorge Ben 'the father of samba rock', and that title barely scratches the surface of what this Rio de Janeiro native has pulled off over six decades. Working from a samba foundation, he folded in soul, funk, rock and bossa nova in ways that felt genuinely new, and his 1963 debut Samba Esquema Novo landed with enough force to make Philips scramble for follow ups immediately. His song 'Mas, que Nada!' became an international standard covered by Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Sérgio Mendes, while his 1976 album África Brasil fused funk with samba so infectiously that its melody found its way into Rod Stewart's global hit 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', leading to a plagiarism lawsuit that Stewart settled by donating the royalties to UNICEF. Rolling Stone placed his track 'Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma)' at number 351 on their updated 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. He has recorded under the name Jorge Ben Jor since 1989.
