About
Also known as: Jorge Abner Drexler Prada
Jorge Drexler made history at the 2005 Academy Awards when he became the first Uruguayan to win an Oscar, taking home Best Original Song for 'Al Otro Lado del Río' from The Motorcycle Diaries. In a memorable twist, he wasn't allowed to perform the song at the ceremony because he supposedly wasn't famous enough, so Antonio Banderas and Carlos Santana sang it instead. Drexler responded by reciting two verses of the song at the podium when he collected his award. Beyond that headline moment, Drexler has built a genuinely distinctive body of work that blends Uruguayan traditional forms like candombe, milonga and tango with bossa nova, jazz, pop and electronics. His 2017 album Salvavidas de Hielo was constructed entirely from guitars and the human voice, while Bailar en la Cueva from 2014 marked a shift toward rhythm and dance. He has racked up thirteen Latin Grammy Awards and collaborated with Shakira on Spanish versions of several of her singles. Identity, race and religion run as steady themes through his lyrics.
