About
Jorian van Nee is a Dutch pianist who doesn't stay in one lane. He's part of VIRTUOOS, the AVROTROS talent programme for young classical musicians, and he plays the way musicians did in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: as a soloist who knows his repertoire, but also as a composer and an improviser who happily wanders into jazz. His programmes reflect that. He might drift off into an improvisation around Schumann's Von fremden Ländern und Menschen, play pieces from his own Kinderszenen, and then dig into Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. With him, the jump from an Impromptu to a driving jazz passage can happen in a heartbeat. He's a good example of a new generation of musician composers who refuse to pick between playing the classics and making something of their own.
