About

Joseph Middleton has a rare distinction in the classical world: he was the first accompanist ever to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award, a field usually dominated by soloists. Based in the UK, he works primarily in art song and lieder, partnering with some of the finest singers around, including Carolyn Sampson, Dame Sarah Connolly, Iestyn Davies and Ian Bostridge, performing everywhere from Wigmore Hall to the Elbphilharmonie and Alice Tully Hall in New York. His discography spans labels like Harmonia Mundi, Chandos and BIS, and has picked up an Edison Award plus Disc of the Year recognition from the Sunday Times and International Classical Music Awards, among others. Gramophone magazine has called him "the absolute king of programming," which reflects his other big role: directing Leeds Lieder, a festival he has grown from a biennial event into a major annual fixture, as well as running the Pembroke Lieder Scheme at Cambridge, which has shaped a generation of singers and pianists.
