About
Also known as: Joseph David Shabason
Joseph Shabason is a Canadian saxophonist and composer whose instrument of choice threads through some genuinely great records. You have probably heard his work without knowing it: his saxophone playing shaped the sound of Destroyer's Kaputt, The War on Drugs' Lost in the Dream, and a string of sessions for acts like Austra, Allie X, and Fucked Up. He is also one third of Toronto synth pop group DIANA, whose debut Perpetual Surrender landed on the Polaris Music Prize longlist. His solo albums are where things get personal and a little more experimental. Aytche drew on ambient composers like Jon Hassel and Gigi Masin, while Anne processed his mother's Parkinson's diagnosis through field recordings and warm, unhurried jazz textures. The Fellowship explored his complicated history with an Islamic community he eventually left. Then Welcome to Hell took a sharp left turn, re scoring a 1996 Toy Machine skateboard film into something lighter and more joyful than anything he had done before.
