About
Joshua Burnell started out in folk but has drifted a long way from the acoustic fireside. His music now blends alt folk, glam rock and classical touches into something that sounds like retro pop rock made for today. Think hooky melodies wrapped in warm vintage synths, shimmering guitars, rich vocal harmonies and lyrics with some actual thought behind them. Critics keep reaching for the same reference points: early seventies Bowie and the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, with a dash of The War On Drugs in the mix. His album Glass Knight, from 2023, is the one that pulled in a wave of new listeners, and it picked up a place on a best albums of the year list from RnR Magazine. He comes across as an artist happy to take creative risks, borrowing from the past without sounding stuck in it.
