Joy Orbison, the alias of Peter O'Grady from Croydon, pulls together house, dubstep, UK funky, UK garage and oldschool jungle into something that feels genuinely its own. His debut single 'Hyph Mngo', put out on Hotflush Recordings in 2009, landed like a small earthquake in underground circles, topping Fact Magazine's best tracks of the year and landing at number 23 in Resident Advisor's top 100 tracks of the 2000s. That kind of reception from a debut is rare. Since then he has kept busy on multiple fronts: running his Hinge Finger label alongside artist Will Bankhead, releasing a string of collaborations with Boddika, and hosting the in game radio station Still Slippin' Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto Online, which spins experimental electronic, UK hip hop, grime and dancehall. His influence list reads like a deliberately eclectic mood board, from J Dilla and My Bloody Valentine through to The Beach Boys, and somehow that breadth shows up in the music.
